In the off-season keeping your team’s morale up through the winter can be challenging. Just make sure you talk to all your players on a regular basis so they can keep you up to date with what’s going on in their lives and how they’re feeling. Another really tough one for captains is cutting players in the off-season. This is a really tricky one if the player is popular within the team, but if you are a real paintballing professional organisation you have to cut the players that are not making the grade. Also this is a perfect opportunity to get rid of any potential cancers or players that are doing more harm than good. Even if a guy from Durham is one of your best, if he has locker room problems get rid of him now so you can find a replacement in the off-season. There is too much paintballing talent out there to have to put up with crap. Now we get to my favourite bit, talking about training in the off-season. For me personally, this is my opportunity to put up some weight and actually build some muscle. I won’t go into much detail about training philosophies or principles we use in Durham, just remember that we don’t want to burn outselves out from the rigorous regular season training, so during the off-season do more fun things to stay in shape. Take up another active sport like indoor football, basketball or mountain biking. Just do something to stay in Durham to stay active and keep your mind occupied. Also do exercises that are fun will keep your motivation up. Personally I will do more dead lifts and squats to build more strength and I can go heavier because I have more time to recoup if I get injured.
