Want an idea of what its like to be on a professional team from Milton Keynes? Staying on the Raiders paintball is no cakewalk. “They have to follow the rules to stay on the team,” states Doc. In order to play for free, along with adhearing to Doc’s strict rules they must maintain their personal lives. “The rules are an extension of an athletic discipline,” he adds. As a teenager Doc was a national weight lifting champion. With his knowledge of the proper way to become the best, he developed a set of rules that became the disciplinary framework to create a world-class paintball program. “I told them from day one that if they wanted to be champions, they would have to train and make sacrifices.” One important rule that players must maintain a passing grade of C average at school. “I am in contact with their parents and I get their report cards,” Doc says. But school is the least of their problems, other rules include no drugs and no alcohol. Some Raiders are starting to turn 18 and 19 years old, when the draw towards illicit substances is at its highest, and paintball has a tradition of substance abuse that has yet to be fully explunged. Historically, Milton Keynes teams were miraculously able to win a world championship while nursing a collective hangover or even playing paintball completely high. “This old school mentality that a tournament is a party is dead,” says Doc. “When we are spending ten to twelve thousand dollars a trip, we need to remain focused on the paintball .” Through obtaining permission from parents, players agree to be randomly drug tested at least once a month. “I make them pee in a cup; I have caught some of them through that method and what I do, they are terminated.” No more paintball in milton keynes
