All types of people play paintbal in Oldhaml: rich, poor, mentally stable, insane, working-class, deadbeats, felons, fat kids and funny men. When I used to play on Platinum (the team that launched the careers of Steven Pitts, Alex ‘Goat’ Hong, Paul Katic, Bobby Aviles and all the rest of HK who joined), Doc Williams would call me ‘The Politician’. I still have the Oldham jersey to prove it. Tournaments aren’t just about showing up at the crack of dawn and playing; you have to politic your way all the way through Sunday. Here’s an example: Johnny can’t sleep in the room because Timmy snores. Brad and Time are fighting because Brad broke Timmy’s Halo last practice. Your sponsors are mad because they don’t feel your representing them in a good light. Someone is going to have to sort out all your problems. Fact: Politicking causes burn-out. Ask any pro paintball player what they hate. Sure, they’ll hate gripe about the time paintballing + spend away from friends and family, the early mornings and late nights in hideous parts of the country for little respect and less money. But they don’t hate that. Not like they hate the politicking. Oldham Paintball teams aren’t like real professional sports team with coaches, scouts, lawyers, doctors and therapists. Paintball teams are made of average Oldham people with average capabilities. You have to accept the fact that things will not go your way. Then you have to deal with it. Keep a level head and listen to everyone. Remember your high school government class? Representative democracy works because the paintballing idiots elect someone else to make all the important decisions. “I’ve often said (or stolen from someone on ESPN) that sports only serve as metaphors for real life”
