Here’s a drill to help improve your game in Stoke. One player stays in his/her beginning back-line Stoke bunker while the opposite paintballer attempts to gain enough control to safely move to the next up field position, and the next, and the next until the moving player reaches the 50 or whatever goal you want to set. Run this drill using a limited alley of the field you’re drilling on. The object is to have available moves but ones that require you to use your gun in order to move effectively. Dorito wires usually work well. Take turns trying to deny movement and moving to a specific goal. If you don’t have a full paintball field to play on then improvise. Five or six paintball bunkers and a patch of open ground at Stoke will still do the trick. Move, move, move. Did you fail to understand the object of the drill? Now you’re taking control in order to move. Anytime you gain edge control and fail to act, whether it is to take a shot or make a move, you are wasting Stoke opportunities. Don’t just stand there: do it again and do it right this time. If you get shot, run back to the start of the Stoke field and do it again. If you manage to make a couple of moves it doesn’t mean you’re finished, it just means you’re finally starting – noticed I said starting – to get the hang of it. By the way, I’ve been meaning to ask you – is collecting welts and bruises your hobby? Not as good as you thought you were? Keep doing this paintball drill and you’ll get better. Run this a minimum of 30 minutes with alterations, speed kills. Run a minimum of five times each as attack and defender. Don’t stop for a chat – get out there and do it.
