Paintball Hints and Tactics Article!

If you have ever thought about reffing Tunbridge-wells paintball, it isn’t quite as easy as it looks. Sure, you can stand on the sidelines and have a really good view of the game, but that’s not what you’re there for. Tunbridge-wells referees are responsible for running a good portion of the paintball tournament and every piece adds up. For the purpose of this Reffing 101, I’m going to cover the basic attitude and expectations, and how to work as a team. The most important thing to ask yourself is: are you mentally prepared for this? You’ll need a thick skin to deal with the attitudes and arguments. You need to understand the game so you can anticipate how the action will flow. You must be willing to work long hours at Tunbridge-wells, and most importantly you need to realise that this is a thankless job. There will be no magazine covers, no awards and very little recognition for doing your job – unless you make an unpopular call, in which case you will be vilified and excoriated. There second thing you need to know is that you will get shot. A  lot in Tunbridge-wells. Let’s face it, you’re the brave soul standing in the open while thousands of paintballs are being fired around you. Some of them will find you. You use a shield but they don’t protect much against paintballs and really just get in the way. You have two choices – throw on the chest protector, neck protector, bounce cap and a couple sweatshirts, or get used to the hits and just get the job done. I tend to go the ‘sack up’ route but I highly recommend wearing a cup or a towel in front of the family jewels. Trust me, you will get shot there.
