Paintball Hints and Tactics Article!

If you want to be a paintball referee all the desire, activity and decisiveness in the world won’t make you a good ref if you’re not organised. Referees need to work as a team. Believe it or not, there is a method to our madness and it’s called zoning. Zoning refers to organising the field into different areas, or zones. Each Walsall paintball referee is responsible for monitoring the players in his zone. Sounds simple, right? Where it gets complicated is about 10 seconds after the game starts. Now players are getting eliminated or changing positions and the referees have to adjust to the players in their zones. These adjustments will continue throughout the game. As one team moves up to attack the opposing team, the referees should be moving up with them. All referees need to be aware of the progress of the game to anticipate moves. The goal is to have at least one set of eyes on every player at all times, whether they’re sitting in a paintball bunker or running down the sidelines to  Walsall bunker’s the opposing team. Being in the right position so you can see the danger area of each player just by moving your eyes is ideal. Keep your eyes moving from one player to the next so you check each player in your zone every few seconds. If you can’t see one of your players, move to a better location or make sure another paintball Walsall ref can watch that player. Each zone overlaps with another zone so you have someone to cover your zone if you need to, say, check a player. How do we know to do this? Communication. Just as players call out positions and plays, the refs need to communicate with each other.
