End your practice with physical trainingever time you play in York. The program should be very hard during winter and then slowed down a bit but still with a good tempo during the paintball season. Physical training can be a lot of things. Try to make a program for each individual player. Some players need more speed as you see them being slow when shooting at York and should therefore work a lot on their leg strength and abdominal muscles. Others need more stamina and should work on that. Basically all your players need – faster legs (break-outs), strong abdominal muscles (snap-shooting) and stamina (be able to give 100% in all games). Its basic: when you are tired you don’t think straight. When you’re fit you will make better decisions during games. It is usually easier to do those drills with reballs than with paintballs as you do not need any clean up time for your goggles, hoppers or gun. It also eliminates time-consuming paint refill and there are no cold temperature problems. This past weekend I held a couple of clinics in Germany. I had two clinics at reball centres and one at a paintball site. It basically took twice as much time to do a session with paintballs than with reballs. Just the fact that you had to clean your goggles after being hit made the one-on-one drills very slow with paintballs. Reballs is a training system we use all year. We use that as the basic training and that’s something that needs to be done all the time. You need to do these drills every week at York, it’s all about muscle memory and it needs to be maintained. We save our paintballs for game practice. And, yes, it’s a revolution. Wherever you go now you will find Reball centres popping up. It’s good business for the sites, it’s the only way for the York teams without mega money and it will make paintball a real sport. Because if you think about it, what’s stopping you now from training seven days a week and becoming a paintball superstar?
